CHAPTER 43

ASHLEY

I walked back to the Hamiltons’ with thoughts of how things used to be flooding my mind. I forced myself back to the present and to the mystery at hand.

I noticed movement in an upstairs window and saw Tim on a cell phone, pacing. He looked out and gave me a blank stare.

Carolyn came out. “We’ve been looking for you, Ashley. Your brother called. Said it was urgent.”

I went in and called him. His phone cut in and out, and there was a lot of noise in the background. I realized he was on the train.

“Ashley, you won’t believe what happened.”

He told me the whole story and said the policeman who gave him a ride to the L also ran the license number Bryce had seen through the system.

“It’s registered to a Tucker Brooks of Ridgefield, but I didn’t recognize the street.”

I told him I had to go back to the furniture store late to finish the commercial shoot and promised I wouldn’t say anything to the Hamiltons until he got back.

When I hung up Tim was behind me.

“What did your brother say?”

“Said he had a good time.”

He cocked his head. “Really?”

I nodded and tried to smile.
